In February, I went to Guatemala on an Insight Trip sponsored by Friendship Bridge. Friendship Bridge is a non-profit, non-governmental organization based in Lakewood, Colorado which distributes micro-loans to women in rural Guatemala since the year 2000.
Since then Friendship Bridge has added other services to help the women such as health care. The newest program is Bridge to Success which empowers more than 1,000 women entrepreneurs with intensive business development training, individual microcredit loans, technical assistance, connection to peer networks, and access to new markets.
Check out their website to learn more about their programs. https://www.friendshipbridge.org/
We went to Panajachel on Lake Atitlan and visited clients on the other side of the lake. On of the most interesting visits was to Elena who is a weaver who uses natural dyes to dye her thread. The photo above is Elena telling our group about how she makes her dyes. Elena weaves scarves, huipiles, and purses. I was so impressed with the vibrant colors that she gets.
I will write more about my Friendship Bridge trip next time.
